Man in water gives two thumbs up

ITC-regulated Level 3 Outdoor First Aid in Crewe, 5 minutes from the station.

A practical 16-hour, ITC-regulated course for people who work, lead or play outdoors in Cheshire and North Staffordshire, including how to manage casualties at open water, serving Nantwich, Woore, Whitmore, Allostock and Delamere.

Outdoors, an ambulance can take longer to reach you, and the person who can help is often you. The Level 3 Outdoor First Aid course teaches you to assess, treat and monitor a casualty in places where there is no quick access to medical care, such as woodland, hills, fields and waterside locations.

Who the course is for:

- Outdoor instructors, activity leaders and coaches
- Forest school and outdoor education staff
- Scout, Guide and youth group leaders
- Dog walkers, ramblers and anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors
- Anyone whose employer or governing body asks for an outdoor-specific first aid qualification

If you are unsure whether this is the right level for your role, get in touch and we will help you check. Always confirm what your employer, insurer or governing body requires.

What you will learn:

The course covers core first aid skills with an outdoor focus. Topics include:

- Scene safety and casualty assessment
- CPR and use of an AED
- Managing bleeding, wounds and shock
- Fractures, sprains and other injuries
- Medical emergencies such as asthma, allergic reactions and diabetes
- Hypothermia
- Making decisions about evacuation and calling for help in a remote location

Dealing with open water casualties

Rivers, lakes, ponds and meres are part of many outdoor sessions and days out. This course helps you think through what to do if someone is in difficulty in or near water. Content includes:

- Putting your own safety first. Rescuers can become casualties, so we look at how to help without entering the water wherever possible.
- Calling for help early and giving clear information to the emergency services.
- Caring for a casualty who has been pulled from the water, including checking breathing and starting CPR when needed.
- Recognising and treating cold water effects and hypothermia.
- Planning ahead: risk assessment, supervision and knowing your emergency procedures near water.

Note: This is first aid training, not water rescue or lifeguard training. It will not qualify you to carry out rescues in the water.

Learn in a real outdoor setting.

Training takes place at Apollo Campus, The Campus, Crewe Green Rd, Crewe CW1 5DU. There is a classroom for theory and woodland nearby, so you can practise in conditions closer to the real thing. The venue is a 5-minute walk from Crewe railway station, which makes it easy to reach by train.

Our course venue is in Crewe, and we welcome learners from across Cheshire and North Staffordshire, including Nantwich, Woore, Whitmore, Allostock and Delamere.
