First Aid Kit Contents — What to Actually Pack for a Cheshire Day Hike

Most generic first aid kit lists are written for camping trips or expeditions, not a straightforward day hike. Here's a leaner list built for exactly that.

The essentials

• Wound care: a handful of assorted plasters, 2–3 sterile gauze dressings, a roll of micropore tape, and one compression bandage for anything more serious than a graze.

• Blister care: specific blister plasters, not standard ones — they cushion differently and stay on far longer under a boot.

• Pain relief: a small strip of whatever you'd normally take, clearly labelled.

• A foil blanket: folds down to almost nothing and matters far more than its size suggests if someone's injured and waiting.

• A whistle.

• Antiseptic wipes: for cleaning a wound before dressing it, particularly relevant on ground with livestock nearby.

What's often missing

Tick removal tools are frequently left out of generic lists despite Cheshire and Staffordshire's farmland and woodland trails being genuine tick country. A simple tick hook takes up no space and matters more here than in many other kit lists you'll find online.

What you don't need for a day hike

Full expedition-level kit — SAM splints, extensive dressings, trauma shears — adds weight without matching the actual risk of a few hours on well-used trails. Match your kit to the walk, not the worst-case scenario of a multi-day expedition.
