What is the Level 3 Outdoor First Aid course?
It’s a two-day, ITC First regulated qualification for anyone working or adventuring more than 30 minutes from emergency help. Unlike a standard workplace course, it assumes the ambulance isn’t coming quickly. That changes how you assess, treat, monitor and plan.
What we covered
Remote casualty care: assessing and managing a casualty over a long period, not just until help arrives
Environmental emergencies: cold injury, heat illness and other conditions the outdoors throws at you
Evacuation planning: deciding when to move a casualty, how, and how to call for help effectively
Core skills: CPR, bleeding control, fractures, head and spinal injuries, and managing an unresponsive casualty
Learning by doing
Most of the weekend was practical. We worked in our classroom and out in the woodland on the Apollo Campus site, because first aid skills hold up best when you’ve practised them somewhere uncomfortable. On day two, groups responded to a casualty with a suspected leg fracture in the woods, with no signal and help at least two hours away.
Who it’s for
Walkers and walk leaders, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award leaders, Forest School practitioners, outdoor instructors, climbers, mountain bikers, and anyone who spends time in remote places with other people.
Train with us
The course is led by Scott Barron, a former Royal Marines Commando with over 20 years in education and training, and an ITC-regulated first aid instructor. We’re based at Apollo Campus, a 5-minute walk from Crewe railway station and close to the M6 at junctions 16 and 17.
